The damage they can do in roof spaces often runs into thousands of pounds and we have witnessed entire wiring systems rendered lethal and plastic water piping destroyed, causing the collapse of ceilings and substantial water damage. It is also worth noting the often hidden exclusion clause in your building and contents insurance that specifically excludes pest damage.

How you can tell when a group of Squirrels becomes a problem?

Any unusual noises or disturbance in a loft space should be thoroughly investigated. It could be due to a trapped bird or mice or rats may have found their way there. It could also be squirrels, especially if tree branches overhang the roof and provide easy access. Squirrels don’t hibernate in winter but they do become less active and will look for somewhere warm, dry and quiet for the cold months and beyond. A little used space such as a loft is an ideal environment in which to build a nest and start breeding – insulation material is even ideal for nest building.

  • Very adapt climbers so can gain access to lofts via holes in facias and soffits
  • A female squirrel can reproduce up to 2 times per year – producing 1- 5 offspring each time.
  • Breeding takes place in December to January and again in May to June
  • Squirrels gnaw to keep there incisor teeth sharp, which presents a risk of damaged cables within loft spaces

Your local Prokill Professional will provide you with advice like this and more in your FREE Prokill Pest Audit, as well as creating a comprehensive control plan that is specific to your problem and environment. Contact us to book yours today!

Prevention of Squirrels

How can you prevent Squirrels making themselves at home on your property?

Helpful Tips

  • Trim tree branches and avoid growing plants on the side of the property – squirrels are excellent climbers and can use these to get onto roofing and enter the home
  • Put outdoor rubbish bags in metal bins with securely fitted lids to stop them feeding from contents.
  • Clean up pet food and bird seed debris, and store pet food in robust containers with fitted lids.
  • Check fascias and soffits for damage that could be being used by squirrels if you know they are active near your property.

The Common Squirrel

Squirrel

(Sciurus Carolinensis)

When you call in Prokill, we’ll carry out a careful inspection of the area and identify that squirrels are indeed the pests to be removed. Once this is established we will put in place an appropriate pest control treatment to ensure effective elimination of the squirrels. We are responsible pest controllers: all products are licensed and our pest control methods adhere to legislation and industry regulations. We will also carry out regular checks until we know the problem has been resolved.

Importantly, and as part of our service, we will also seek to identify how the squirrels gained entry. If we can carry out remedial works to ensure no more squirrels can get in safely we will do so, otherwise we will identify what works are required to yourself to block any points of access. At the same time, we will check for any signs of damage and alert you to anything that may require attention.
