What are the Tell-Tale Signs of Rats In My Home or Business?

Prokill provides a reliable rat pest control service wherever it’s required – from removing one rat in a domestic property to baiting an industrial site that needs to keep down the resident rat population, we can provide the expertise and effective solutions.

Finding evidence of rat activity in your home or business premises should be acted on immediately – finding droppings that are 1-2cm long, damage to food packaging, wood or plastic, or shredded paper or cardboard means you need the services of a pest control expert.

And just like mice, rats can cause costly damage to property. Constantly gnawing, they will even chew through cables and wires and can cause electrical faults as a result. It’s always wise to check the details of your buildings insurance policy if your property is susceptible to rat infestation; many insurance companies list fire caused by rodent damage within the exclusions to cover.

Helpful Tips

Measures you can take to prevent a rat problem in your home or business.

  • Keep foodstuffs in metal or glass containers with tight fitting lids.
  • Tidy inside the house and around the garden – less clutter means less places to hide.
  • Put outdoor rubbish bags in metal bins with securely fitted lids to stop them feeding from contents.
  • Clean up pet food and bird seed debris, and store pet food in robust containers with fitted lids – preferably above ground level.
  • Keep gardens free from debris and keep clutter to a minimum.
  • If you have a compost heap don’t include organic food waste, as this will attract them.

Different Types of Rat Species

Black Rat

(Rattus rattus)

This rat species is now very rare in the UK and Ireland. For this reason, they are normally found in ports and similar transit areas. The black rat can be identified by their small body, large ears, pointed nose, tail longer than its body, and movement similar to that of a squirrel.

Brown Rat

(Rattus norvegicus)

The Brown rat, also known as the sewer rat, or the Norway rat, is the most commonly found of the two rats within the UK and Ireland.

This rodent pest breeds throughout the year with remarkable success. The gestation period lasts for up to 21 days, and the young rat reaches sexual maturity at 8-12 weeks, able to have in the region of 6 litters per year with a litter size of up to eight baby rats.
