As one of the most robust and prolific to be found on our shores, we’re all aware of the common black garden ant. With colonies growing to a whopping 15,000 workers, it’s no wonder that these insects become pests when they enter buildings and properties.
Why are ants considered pests?
Naturally, nobody wants colonies of ants swarming their home or office. Aside from the fact that it looks unsightly, these insects can cause damage to patios and other areas where they create nests.
What’s more, the ants which are typically found indoors are worker ants and they’re foraging for food. As well as stealing food supplies, any food they have left will be tainted because ants travel through unpleasant and dirty places before entering buildings. This is particularly a problem for the hospitality sector because serving contaminated food to customers can result in illness.
Signs that you have an ant problem
- Live insects – if you notice a large number of ants in one area of your property, you are likely to have an infestation nearby.
- Ant pathways – some ants will lay down a pheromone trail as they move toward a food source.
- Ant nests – these may be hard to identify because they often look like a small pile of dirt or soil and are typically found on trees, in the ground, under stones or logs, inside logs, hollow stems or even acorns. The sand used in-house foundations, garden paths and patios provide a good site for the queen ant to start a colony and nests are also increasingly being found inside the walls of properties.
How to prevent an ant infestation
One of the most effective ways of preventing an ant invasion is to stop these pests from reaching food sources. They are usually drawn to sweet products but will also look for high protein sources, such as meats.
Ants are notoriously determined when on the hunt for food and can get into jars and boxes through even the smallest gap. The good news is that there are a number of ways you can reduce the likelihood of an ant infestation occurring including:
- Clear up food and liquid spills as quickly as you can.
- Sweep up any food crumbs or debris.
- Store your food in sealed containers.
- Block off entry points such a cracks in walls and gaps in doors.
- If you have any pets, clear up their food immediately.
