It’s unlikely to keep you up at night however because most people are pretty confident that they don’t have an infestation.

Rodents are very sneaky however and to top it off, they do everything they can do avoid contact with humans so the only time they’re likely to come out is in the dead of night. Even if you can’t see the signs of rats or mice in the house, it’s still worth checking the following areas of your home just in case you have a case of some very devious pests.

The Loft

How often do you go into your loft? Chances are it’s only a couple of times a year. Dark, quiet, plenty of insulation to eat and very isolated, lofts make the ideal home for rodents.

Don’t be mistaken into thinking that there’s no way anything could possibly get into the loft – rats while not great climbers, can still easily sneak in by climbing up walls or squeezing through holes.

Underneath The House

If you notice an area of subsidence (caving in or sinking of land) around your property, this could be a sign that you have rodents burrowing underneath your home.

If this is the case, please get it checked out by a professional and do not seal up the burrows and hope the problem will go away. Subsidence can also be caused by water erosion.

Inside Walls

Rodents are actually very intelligent creatures and will, therefore, find all sorts of weird and wonderful places to hide. If you’ve noticed scratching noises coming from the walls which are even more noticeable at night, you will almost certainly have an infestation.

You may be tempted to leave them be as they’re not bothering you when they’re out of sight but rats and mice love to chew on electrical wires. This poses a huge risk to you and your family because it’s one of the most common causes of house fires.

Bath Panels

If you knew that you were sharing your relaxing bath with a rat you’d probably run screaming. Unfortunately, if you do have a rodent infestation, this is a very real possibility.

In one particular case, we were called to at a block of flats, we found a very smug rat who had been hiding in the bath panels for some time. He had chewed into the stud walls and much of the insulation used to lag the soil pipe system had been pulled under the bath to create a very cosy nest indeed.

Within A Freezer

You may think that because one of the main reasons rats seek shelter in our homes is to stay warm, that the one area of your house that would be safe is the freezer. If the many years we have worked in this profession has taught us anything, however, it’s that rodents will stop at nothing to get what they want.

We had a call from a distressed homeowner who kept two deep freezers in their garage. After returning home after a three-month overseas break, off they went to the freezer to get some dinner out. What they found, however, was a distinct lack of food and some very fat rats.

How did the rats manage to get into the freezer you may wonder? They excavated the rear of the garage, found a small defect in the outer wall, traveled through the cavity, chewed out the inner door frame, entered the inside of the garage, located the freezer and opened it up without any trouble whatsoever. We told you, they really will stop at nothing to get food.
