The mere mention of fleas is enough to make your skin crawl but contrary to popular belief, it’s not just pet owners who need to stay vigilant. Fleas parasite a wide variety of animals including dogs, cats, humans, chickens, rabbits, squirrels, rats, ferrets and mice.

Fleas aren’t just a nuisance to their hosts, they can also cause acute irritation, infection and transfer of other parasites, such as tapeworms.

The flea bite causes an itching sensation which in turn may result in the host attempting to remove the pest by biting, pecking or scratching the vicinity of the parasite.

What are the signs of a flea infestation?

The British summer often combines scorching heat and heavy downfalls which creates a warm and humid environment. Unfortunately, this provides the ultimate breeding ground for fleas.

If you do own a cat or dog, the signs are easy to spot. Be warned however, while you may only see a couple of live fleas – where there’s one, there’s usually more. Common signs to look out for in your pets include:

  • Droppings or flea dirt in fur.
  • Allergic dermatitis.
  • Excessive scratching, licking or biting at skin.
  • Hair loss.
  • Scabs and hot spots.
  • Pale gums.

How to tackle fleas

Know what to look out for – check your pets, their bedding and yourself. You may physically be able to see fleas or black droppings on your pets, their bedding, your clothes or carpets.

  • Prevent them in the first place – you can do this by vacuuming regularly, minimising food supply like organic matter in carpets, bedding or furnishings, check pets regularly using flea combs and wash pet bedding regularly (ideally above 50 degrees).

How to stop the spread of fleas

If your pet has fleas, consult your vet and obtain a suitable insecticide such as Advantage or Frontline which will kill the adult fleas and prevent any eggs already embedded in their fur from hatching.

Vacuum carpets, furnishings, floorboards and upholstered furniture. This will not only get rid of adult fleas, but also their eggs and larvae. Don’t forget to empty your vacuum cleaner very carefully in an outdoor, open space away from the house to ensure any live adult fleas do not make their way back into your home.
