For the majority of us, it’s not a cause for concern so we let them be.
While the majority of the 2,400 different species of moths found in the UK are perfectly harmless, a few are seen as pests due to the damage their larvae can cause to materials, textiles and stored products.
Although they don’t pose any health risks, moths can very much be a nuisance if they’re destroying things around the home. The most common moth-related calls we get at Prokill are for the removal of the Tineola biselliella, otherwise known as the common clothes moth. Thanks to improved living conditions such as central heating, these tiny, golden moths have begun to thrive in our homes all year round.
Even though they’re very small, these creatures can cause serious damage to clothes, carpets, curtains, furs and leathers. If you only spot one or two, don’t be fooled into thinking it’s no big deal. A female clothes moth can lay around 200-300 eggs in their short seven to 10-day lifespan, thus creating widespread damage to your clothes and home furnishings.
Signs of a moth problem
Moth problems aren’t uncommon, in fact, a whopping 1.5 million households in the UK suffer from damage caused by these insects. If you think that you may have an infestation, look out for the following signs:
- Unexplained damage to clothing. This most frequently occurs in knitwear, silk or leather garments.
- You may physically see the presence of moths but this will require vigilance. Their eggs are very small and are usually found in dark, undisturbed areas of your drawers, wardrobes or even skirting boards. While adult moths are a bit bigger, they can fit into very tight crevices so can be hard to spot unless you catch them in flight.
- Some house moths scavenge on food so you may notice damage to products stored in cupboards.
- Larvae cases around the home.
- If you have a heavy infestation, moths may fly out of your wardrobe when you open it.
- Webbing, similar to spider webs may be present. These often contain pupal cases.
- Look at the bottom of your wardrobe, you may find small piles of dust or frass. Also check under chairs, beds and fabric-covered furniture for this.
- Unexplained damage to your carpets.
What to do if you have a moth infestation
If you do have a moth infestation, the good news is that it’s entirely treatable when implementing the following measures:
- Vacuum affected areas.
- Dispose of items which have been damaged.
- If materials are salvageable, remove any larvae before washing or dry cleaning.
- Spray wardrobes, drawers, carpet edges, skirting boards and cracks with an insecticidal spray.
- Mothballs are a common method of removing and keeping moths at bay. While they do work, these bad-smelling repellents can be just as unpleasant as moths themselves.
- Large and more serious infestations may require professional treatment.
