- Many people are scared of rats and mice so chances are that you don’t want them running around your home.
- They can carry a number of diseases including dysentery, salmonella and gastroenteritis.
- They contaminate and eat food items.
- They can cause fires thanks to their tendency to chew wires.
- If you run a business, the presence of rodents can destroy your reputation.
The good news is that there are a number of things you can do to prevent an infestation from occurring in the first place.
Know the signs
Rats and mice will do anything they can to avoid human contact so there’s a strong possibility that you won’t see any unless the infestation is severe. If you make yourself aware of the signs, you may be able to stop the problem before it gets too serious.
- One of the more obvious signs is rodent droppings around the building.
- You may notice unexplained nesting materials such as shredded paper, fabric or dried plant matter.
- Food packaging has been chewed.
- Holes have been chewed through walls and floors – rodents will do this to create entry points into the property.
- Stale smells which are difficult to identify the source.
Block any potential entry points
If you don’t want rats and mice to enter your property, don’t make it easy for them. Seal any holes inside and outside the building, no matter how small they are – rodents can squeeze through much smaller holes than you might expect.
Some of the most common entry points for rodents include:
- Inside, underneath and behind kitchen cabinets, fridges and stoves
- Inside cupboards near the floor corners
- Around windows and doors. Young rats and mice can even squeeze through small gaps under doorways so fit strips to the bottom of doors as a deterrent
- The fireplace
- Pipes under sinks and washing machines
- Floor and dryer vents
- The attic
- The basement
- Around holes for electrical, plumbing, cable and gas lines
- Cat flaps
You can prevent rodents entering your property through these entry points by filling them with stainless steel wire wool, caulking or concrete. Steel and aluminium plating can also be used and be aware that rats can jump so make sure you check up to a height of about four feet.
Remove nesting sites from your property
At this time of year, it’s particularly easy for rodents to gather nesting materials because the leaves start to fall off the trees. Try to remove any potential nesting materials from around the building including leaves, twigs and deep mulch.
Hide any food and water sources
One of the main things that will attract rodents is food so try to do everything you can to eliminate any sources in and around the building.
- Keep any kitchen rubbish in containers with tight-fitting lids – both inside and outside.
- Turn compost piles to cover newly added food scraps.
- If you provide food for birds, only feed them huskless items which leave less residue.
- Keep opened food items in thick plastic containers with tight lids.
- Clean up spilled food immediately and wash any dishes soon after use.
- Always keep outside cooking areas clean.
- Put pet food away after use and don’t leave food or water bowls outside overnight.
