Whether they’re buzzing around the house or gate-crashing our barbecues, they seem to get everywhere. While most people are aware that they’re not the most hygienic insects to have around, are flies even more troublesome than we think?
Did you know?
For example that the average house fly has as many as 33 million bacteria living in their gut and as many as 250,000 on their body? What’s even more worrying is that all these millions of bacteria are very easily transferred to anything they land on which creates the risk of Salmonella, Campylobacter, E Coli and Tuberculosis.
If you think that spotting the odd fly isn’t a problem, think again. The house fly can lay eggs in batches of 120-150 and hatch just eight hours later. What’s more, the lesser house fly can’t be controlled by conventional fly zappers and the house fly is becoming resistant to common pesticides in-house treatments, deeming these methods expensive and ineffective.
It’s important to remember that if you run a commercial or industrial business, fly control is a legal requirement. These pests can carry a number of dangerous diseases and if a fly problem is left uncontrolled, it has the potential to turn into a serious infestation.
Because many dangerous diseases are carried by flies, environmental agencies are quick to enforce the terms of the Food Safety Act 1955 and 1976 for individuals and businesses selling or dealing with food in unhygienic conditions.
How to prevent fly infestations
Just like any animal or insect, flies are attracted to food so make sure you clean up any food or liquid spills as quickly as possible.
- Sweep up any food crumbs or debris.
- Store food items in sealed containers.
- Block any entry points such as cracks in walls and gaps in doors.
- If you have pets, clear up any food they don’t eat immediately.
What to do when flies are a problem
Prokill’s Cobra electronic fly control system uses Translucent Technology to catch flies faster than similar traps. Its translucent cover emits UV at a 180° angle which attracts flies and captures them inside the unit, creating a discreet fly control system with a large catch area.
Additionally, the Glueboard technology utilised in this product retains the insect whole so that there’s no risk of contamination. All insects are hidden from view by the discreet ‘louvre’ panel so you don’t have to worry about customers or visitors seeing lots of dead flies laying around. This tool has the ability to capture 93.2% of house flies in just three hours.
If you’re dreading the summer approaching because you know that flies are normally a problem in your home or business, please feel free to contact Prokill and we will provide you with a free risk assessment as well as a tailor-made control programme which will compliment your own hygiene measures.
