Mice are typically nocturnal and they’re also very good at keeping themselves hidden so it’s not unusual for infestations to go undetected for a long time.
You may even notice the signs of a mouse presence before you physically see any. This can include:
• Small, dark droppings
• A strange ammonia small
• Greasy marks on walls or skirting boards
• Gnaw marks in furniture, skirting boards or floorboards
• Shredded materials around the house
• You may hear scratching noises
If you think you may have mice in your home but can’t seem to find any, below are some of the most common places they like to hide.
Mice In the loft
Lofts are the perfect place for mice to make themselves right at home. It’s quiet, they can go undisturbed for long periods of time, there’s plenty for them to nibble on and there’s no shortage of nesting spots.
While they may be little, mice can cause a tremendous amount of damage because they shred soft materials such as insulation, cardboard boxes, paperwork and any fabrics you may have stored away.
Kitchens
This is an incredibly unpleasant thought but kitchens are another common place to find mice because there are of course plenty of food sources here. Make sure you check behind all your appliances because these creatures can very easily squeeze into gaps behind fridges, freezers, and cookers. If you have any cupboards you don’t open very often they could even brazenly be lurking in there too.
If you strongly suspect you have a mouse infestation but you’re struggling to detect where they’re coming from, also look in any areas where pipework or cabling enters through walls from the outside. It’s not uncommon for them to sneak in this way and they could be hiding places like behind your washing machine.
Basements
If you have a basement, this is one of the first places you should check for possible mouse infestations. Mice can easily gain entry to this part of your home through air bricks and vents – especially if they’re already damaged.
Cavity Walls
Mice are actually very clever and will make use of any space they know they’re going to go undetected. This can include cavity walls, suspended ceilings, crawlspaces, under the stairs and in airing cupboards. Naturally, these places are a lot harder to access than your loft for example so in this case you may need to call in a professional to have a look.
The Outside Of Your Home
Barns, garages, and sheds are also common hiding places for mice because they’re easy to gain access to and chances are that you don’t go in them very often, especially in winter. You may be relieved that they’re outside and leave them to it but this can lead to problems in the future. By allowing them to live freely around your property, they will breed and you can guarantee that eventually, they will make their way into your home.
