If you’ve fallen victim to a mouse infestation, chances are they’ve found themselves a convenient food source in your home. A nice big slab of cheese would be the obvious culprit but despite what we’ve been led to believe, mice don’t even like cheese all that much.
Aside from the cheese, mice aren’t fussy eaters and they will consume almost anything that will help them to survive. They do however have a few firm favourites which you can guarantee if left lying around, will attract a potential infestation.
Fruit
Plenty of us leave a bowl of fruit out on the kitchen counter but this could actually be enticing mice into your home or office. These little creatures have quite the sweet tooth and although they’re unlikely to steal a chunk of your Dairy Milk, fruit is the perfect treat for them. They’re particularly drawn to grapes, cranberries, peaches, bananas, and figs so try to remember to keep all fruit stored away safely in the fridge.
Vegetables
Because their teeth never stop growing, mice like to gnaw away at things. Aside from your furniture, the cardboard boxes you’ve stashed away in the loft and even electrical wiring, mice also love crunchy vegetables. Cucumber, carrots, Brussel sprouts, broccoli, cabbage, and celery are just a few of their favourites so again, always ensure that vegetables are kept in the fridge.
Seeds and grains
Another thing mice love to eat is seeds and grains. Anything from oats, barley, rye and wheat to millet, flax seeds, pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds will be more than enough to keep them happy.
Peanut butter
The last thing you probably expected to hear is that mice love a bit of peanut butter. This does actually make sense when you think about it however because they primarily feast on nuts and seeds. If you’re trying to lure a stubborn mouse out of hiding, a scoop of peanut butter on a spoon will more than likely entice them out in no time.
Insects
A lot of people don’t realise that mice are actually omnivores. While they do predominantly tend to stick to a vegetarian diet because fruits and vegetables are very sweet, they will also eat insects because of the sweetness of the proteins found in these bugs.
If you have an insect infestation, it’s important to deal with it as soon as possible because it could very quickly draw mice to your property. They are particularly fond of worms, snails, beetles, cockroaches, caterpillars, and grasshoppers.
Meat
In an urban environment where large quantities of meat are always available, this will become the main source of food for mice. They will eat pretty much anything and when starvation is looming, they will even turn cannibalistic if they have to.
