Moles are pretty cute and while many of us may think they couldn’t possibly be classed as a pest, avid gardeners may disagree.

For the most part, moles live in seclusion underground and rarely come to the surface. They can become major pests for a number of reasons, however:

  • Their burrowing can destroy gardens, golf courses and parks
  • They disturb and can even completely remove the root systems of plants
  • Their burrows create underground travel lanes for other small animals such as mice
  • The earth mounds they create can cause hazards in playing fields and paddocks. Horses and domestic animals often suffer from sprains or broken limbs because of earth mounds
  • If you have a significant invasion of moles, it might be a sign of more serious issues. Their presence in large numbers could be because you have a high population of soil pests – a sign that all is not well with your soil life

The signs of a mole infestation

The most common signs of a mole infestation include:

  • Unexplained mounds of dirt which look like raised volcano-shaped swellings
  • Disturbed root systems
  • Moles often bring up stones to the surface so if you’re suddenly noticing stones when you don’t usually, this could be a sign
  • The ground has become uneven
  • Burrowing can lead to subsidence, especially on lighter soils
  • Moles are rarely seen above ground but on the off-chance that you do see one, you will be able to recognise it from its dense blackish-brown fur and broad front paws which have been especially adapted for digging. They are usually between six and eight inches long and have slender, hairless snouts and small eyes and ears

What to do if you have a mole infestation

Trying to eliminate a mole infestation is not something you should attempt yourself. Prevention can only be undertaken by specifically trained pest control experts and is subject to site risk assessments and method statements.

There are however a number of tactics you can employ to prevent moles from making themselves at home in your garden or premises:

  • Check your soil for other pests. A mole problem is often caused by an oversupply of grubs and bugs
  • If you want to protect specific plants from potential mole damage, dig a two to a three-foot deep hole and line the sides and bottom with wire mesh. Fill the hole with soil and the plant and moles won’t be able to get to them
  • Take away their food supply by controlling earthworm population
