Five Tips For Preventing A Rodent Infestation

Whether it’s in your home or within a commercial premises, nobody wants to be faced with a rodent infestation. Not only can it make even the toughest among us feel rather uneasy, these creatures can become aggressive when scared, cause damage to your property and of course, spread a myriad of diseases.

Below are five of our top tips for preventing a rodent infestation.

  1. We’re certain you will have heard this one a dozen times before but we can’t emphasise enough the importance of eliminating potential food sources. This is the number one reason rodents enter properties and the easier you make it for them, the more likely you are to have these unwanted guests.
  • Keep all food products in metal or glass containers with tight-fitting lids
  • Put rubbish bags in metal bins with securely fitted lids
  • Clean up pet food and bird seed debris
  • Clean up food spillages immediately
  • Don’t leave dirty dishes in the sink overnight

2. Another reason why rodents may enter your property is quite simply because they can. Don’t underestimate the determination of these creatures either because if they spot an opportunity, they will work hard to make the most of it. Our second top tip for preventing a rodent infestation is to block any potential entry points into your home. This can include:

  • Inside, underneath or behind kitchen cabinets, cupboards, fridges, and stoves
  • Windows and doors. Install door sweeps on exterior doors and repair damaged screens.
  • Young rats and mice can squeeze through small gaps under doorways so fit strips to the bottom of doors
  • The fireplace
  • Pipes under sinks and washing machines
  • Floor and dryer vents
  • The attic and/or basement
  • Electrical, plumbing, cable and gas lines
  • Cat flaps. Try locking your cat flap at night or installing a microchip cat flap so only your pet can enter the property
  • Seal cracks and holes on the outside of your premises using caulk, steel wool or a combination of both

3. Leaking pipes and clogged drains are perfect breeding sites for pests so ensure you keep attics, basements and crawl spaces well ventilated and dry. Crawl spaces are the small areas under the floor or roof which provide access to your wiring and/or plumbing.

4. If your rodent infestation has left you baffled because you’re doing all the right things to avoid them and there aren’t any possible entry points, there’s a possibility you may be bringing them in accidentally. They may have been hiding in old furniture, boxes, shopping bags and other packages brought to your premises. This is more often the case with commercial properties where you may get a lot of deliveries for stock. If this is the case, ensure you thoroughly inspect all deliveries when they first arrive rather than just storing them in a dark cupboard somewhere.

5. One of the best ways to prevent an outbreak of rodents is to deal with the problem as soon as you spot the signs. Don’t ignore it and hope it goes away because unfortunately, it won’t. If you’re a business, it’s also well worth having a risk assessment and regular inspections because these actions can prevent an infestation from occurring in the first place.
