Aside from the fact that many people are scared of rodents, house mice can cause serious damage to your property.

Perhaps you think mice are quite cute, you feel too guilty to get rid of them or you’re just not that bothered about sharing your home with them. Regardless, mice are a problem. They can very easily contaminate food and spread disease so it’s important to remove them as soon as you spot the signs of an infestation.

What are the signs of a mouse infestation?

Mice tend to be nocturnal and can therefore go undetected for a long time. You may notice a couple signs however:

  • Scratching noises, especially at night.
  • An unusual, ammonia-like smell.
  • Small, dark droppings – check inside or on top of cupboards, along skirting boards and in food products.
  • Grease marks – these are caused by mice brushing against walls, floors and skirting boards.
  • Dark smears around holes or corners.
  • Urine pillars – if you have a heavy infestation or you’ve had mice for a long time, small mounds made up of body grease, dirt and urine may build up.
  • Footprints, especially in dusty environments. A great way to check for activity is to sprinkle flour, talcum powder or china clay and check back the next day for fresh tracks.

What do I do if I have a mouse infestation?

Everyone has different ideas when it comes to pest control so the good news is that there are a number of ways you can deal with an infestation:

  • Conventional spring traps – these are very effective at exterminating mice inside the home. Try using peanut butter or bacon rather than the typical cheese bait and set the traps in areas where mice often forage.
  • Live catch traps – these entice mice to enter a box or structure from which they cannot escape. Traps need to be checked at least once each day so that caught mice can be released outdoors. This is a great method if you’re looking for something more humane and don’t want to kill the mice.
  • Mouse bait laced in poison attracts mice and delivers a fatal dose. While this method of extermination is effective, the affected mice can die in inaccessible locations – leaving an unpleasant and often lingering odour in your home.
  • If all the above options have failed, it’s advisable to consult a pest technician or professional exterminator to remove the mice. Here at Prokill pest control, we can carry out a FREE Pest Risk Survey for homes and commercial spaces. Our professional services will ensure your rodent infestation is dealt with quickly and smoothly.

If you’re prone to mice infestations or think you could be at risk from them, try to prevent them from occurring in the first place. You can do this by:

  • Checking for small cracks in walls, ceilings and floors. Seal anything that measures ½ an inch (1.27cm) or larger with cloth, metal sheeting, plaster or mortar to prevent mice squeezing through.
  • Trim back tree branches in your garden so that none come within 6 feet of your roof. This stops mice and rats jumping or climbing onto your property.
  • Ensure that larders or cupboards with food products are kept shut and all packaging or food containers have tight-fitting lids.
  • Keep the areas around your house, such as sheds, garages and bin areas clean to reduce or eliminate rodent hangouts. It’s also a good idea to have a grassy, open space between buildings and nesting sites.
  • Place pieces of cotton cloth sprinkled with peppermint oil in and around your home, especially near cracks in walls, under beds and in food storage areas. The smell deters mice whilst creating a fresh scent throughout your house.
