Typically, businesses only think about pest control once they’ve had an outbreak. Sadly for many, by the time the problem is noticed it has already caused significant damage.
Not only can pests cause significant damage to stock and equipment, it can be incredibly difficult, if not impossible to manage your reputation if the infestation becomes public knowledge. Head to our blog to find out more about the impact a rodent infestation can have on your business.
While pest control is certainly a nice to have, is it actually a legal requirement for UK businesses?
Please note that the advice below is as per Trading Standards Institute Advice and is applicable to businesses involved with food preparation, food production, retail, catering, restaurants, pubs, cafes, takeaways and fast-food outlets. If your business isn’t mentioned above, please get in touch with Prokill and we’ll be happy to advise.
It is not a legal requirement to have a pest control contract. It is however, a legal requirement that you manage pest control. This means that you’re able to identify and deal with potential risks before they turn into a major problem or contaminate food
How do you manage pest control?
There are a number of procedures you can put in place to ensure your business is managing pest control effectively.
Regular and thorough cleaning and disinfection. It’s a good idea to have a cleaning schedule for your premises and equipment to ensure nothing gets missed
Manage waste. Pests love rubbish because it makes for a quick and easy food source.
Avoid storing waste inside. Keep any rubbish outside, in a bin with a secure
lid and if possible, away from the building
Train employees. Ensure employees understand effective pest control. This can be
anything from not leaving food on their desks to being able to identify the signs of
infestation and where to report a potential outbreak
Maintain external areas. We’re often quick to protect the inside of a premises but
maintaining outdoor areas is just as important. Discarded rubbish can attract pests, leaves and logs provide great shelter and overhanging branches allow easy access into buildings. Even if pests are outside, they still pose a problem because soon enough they will make their way inside
Hire a professional pest controller. Hiring an external company is the best way to
prevent and manage outbreaks. As experts in their field, they can identify potential problems before they come an issue and alert you to any legal requirements you need to adhere to
