Why a rodent infestation is damaging to your business

From managing staff and keeping customers happy to marketing and building a great reputation for yourself, there’s so much to think about when running a business.

With all of this on your plate, chances are that the last thing you want to have to think about is a rodent infestation. While it might be tempting to convince yourself that you didn’t see that mouse or that the problem will go away by itself, unfortunately this is rarely the case.

If you spot any signs of rodents, it’s important to get the problem looked at as soon as possible because infestations can spread quickly and naturally, this will have an impact on your business.

From damaging your reputation to contaminating food products, below we have listed a few of the reason why a rodent infestation can be incredibly costly to your business.

It puts people off entering your premises

They say that first impressions count and any business owner will be all too aware of this. A rude employee is enough to make a potential customer switch to one of your competitors, diners may walk out of a dirty restaurant, shoppers might turn away from a store if there are clothes all over the floor and you can guarantee that a rodent infestation will send customers running.

The sighting of rats, mice and other rodents really is enough to scare anyone off and you can guarantee that people will never give you another chance again, especially if your business is in the catering industry.

They will be costing you money

You may be worried about the financial implications of eliminating a rodent problem but have you thought about how much ignoring the problem is costing you?

  • Unfortunately, rodents are particularly attracted to businesses in the hospitality sector because there is always plenty of food on the premises. Even if they don’t eat all your stock, if they have contaminated it in any way, you absolutely cannot serve these products.
  • If word gets out that you have a rodent infestation, this can be incredibly damaging to your reputation and you may never recover from it.

You’re putting people’s health at risk

On the whole, rodents are pretty harmless and while they usually avoid human interaction at all costs, they may strike out of fear if they feel threatened or scared. A bite from a mouse or squirrel is usually harmless but rate bites are known to spread diseases such as leptospirosis and Hantavirus.

It’s unsanitary

As rodents scurry about, their feet spread germs and bacteria onto any surface they come into contact with. What’s more, their urine and droppings can spread disease which is easily done when food products become contaminated.

They can put the structure of your building at risk

Rodents may be small but they can cause a significant amount of damage. They can chew through wiring, gnaw holes in floorboards and leave dirt and grease marks along walls. What’s even more worrying is that all of this can happen in a very short space of time.
