How businesses can prevent a rat infestation

A rat infestation can cause major problems for any business. Aside from causing damage to your property and reputation, rodents carry harmful diseases which can put both employees and customers at risk.

Pest control – whether it be dealing with infestations quickly or installing preventative measures, should play an important role in the running of your business.

Below we share some of the best ways businesses can avoid falling victim to a rodent infestation.

Regular cleaning
One of the simplest, yet most effective ways of preventing rats invading your business is with regular cleaning. An infestation doesn’t mean your property is dirty, but clutter makes it easy for pests to hide and they will of course be drawn to any potential food sources.

• Ensure food and drink spills are cleaned up immediately
• Empty bins at the end of every day and store rubbish in a tightly sealed bin outside
• Sweep and/or hoover regularly
• Ask employees not to keep food in their desks unless it’s stored in a tightly sealed container
• Try to keep boxes, stock and equipment off the floor in storage areas as this makes it easy for rats to hide

Maintain your building
Check your office premises on a regular basis for potential entry points. If there are any holes, no matter how small, rats will use them to make their way inside.

Common entry points you should check include:
• Inside, underneath and behind kitchen cabinets, fridges and stoves
• Inside cupboards near floor corners
• Around windows and doors. Young rats and mice can even squeeze through small gaps under doorways so fit strips to the bottom of doors
• Pipes under sinks
• Floor and dryer vents
• The attic and/or basement
• Electrical, plumbing, cable and gas lines

Also check for leaks in kitchens and bathrooms on a regular basis. Like any creature, rats need water to survive so they will be attracted to any potential water source.

Call a professional pest controller
The quickest and most effective way to deal with a rodent infestation is to call a professional pest controller. As well as being able to control and eliminate the infestation efficiently, they can show you how to protect your premises from future outbreaks.
