Of all the pest infestations you can have, a cockroach problem is by far one of the most unpleasant. They carry a number of diseases which are dangerous to humans, their population can spread to epidemic proportions in a very short space of time and they leave unpleasant smells and smear marks everywhere they go.

With this in mind you may wonder why you would even want to know where cockroaches may be hiding. Perhaps you feel you would sleep better at night being blissfully unaware of their existence. While this may be true right now, in the long-run, you could be setting yourself up for huge problems.

In the right conditions and when left undisturbed, cockroaches can produce a staggering two million offspring in just one year. So although it may be unsettling to know you have a couple of these unpopular bugs lurking around, things will get a whole lot worse if the problem is ignored.

Where do cockroaches hide?

Cockroaches are nocturnal insects which is why it’s so important to educate yourself about where they may be hiding. Because they prefer to live and feed in the dark, it could be months before you see one and by then you may already have a full-blown infestation.

Dark, moist locations are popular hiding places for cockroaches and commonly include:

• Behind refrigerators, sinks and stoves
• Underfloor drains
• Inside motors and major appliances. Fridges and stoves offer plenty of nooks and crannies to hide in and warm, running motors are particularly appealing. Water heaters are a cockroach’s best friend because they provide water, warmth and are usually hidden away from human traffic

Because cockroaches have the impressive ability to flatten their bodies, they can fit into pretty much any narrow space. This means that they’re also commonly found in some particularly obscure places including:

• Beneath rubber mats
• Behind wallpaper
• Inside wall cracks

Unfortunately, this isn’t where the list of popular cockroach hiding places ends. Make sure you pay attention to the following areas if you suspect you may have an infestation.

• Ceilings – as unpleasant as it sounds, cockroaches like to hang out on ceilings in dark rooms so they can flee quickly and easily if necessary
• Cockroaches are one of the very few insects which love getting wet and being around water. This means that they can commonly be found in areas where pipes come into your home, around washers and dryers, behind cabinets that are damp, around exposed pipes and in walls and floors where there may be condensation. They have also been known to climb up into open faucets and drop down into sinks and bathtubs
• If you’re already feeling squeamish about the presence of cockroaches, you probably won’t be pleased to hear that they also love to snuggle into tight spaces where they can feel fabrics or other materials on their top and undersides. This means furniture such as sofas or your favourite armchair. They do in fact love these spaces so much that they often lay their eggs here
• Cardboard boxes are ideal places for hiding and eating
