Like most pests, bed bugs are incredibly unpleasant so when faced with an outbreak, it’s natural that you’re going to want to deal with it as quickly as possible.

The best way in getting rid of bed bugs would be to contact a professional pest controller but if you would rather try to resolve the problem yourself, below we’ve explained exactly how to do this

Identify the source of the problem

Firstly, carry out a thorough search of your home so you can identify the source of the problem and the signs of bed bugs. Despite what the name suggests, bed bugs aren’t just limited to the bed. You can also find them on headboards, curtains, clothing and pretty much any item of furniture.

It’s easy for bed bugs to go undetected so by the time you notice a problem, they could have spread to other areas of the home. It’s a good idea to inspect and treat your whole property otherwise you’re going to end up fighting a constant battle trying to get rid of them.

Do a deep clean

Getting rid of bed bugs is time consuming because your best bet is to conduct a deep clean of your whole house. Bedding, linen, curtains, clothing, shoes and even toys will need a hot wash and then dry them on the hottest setting you can.

Use a stiff brush to scrub your mattress to remove bed bugs and their eggs and finally, vacuum your bed and any other carpets frequently. Don’t forget to put the vacuum cleaner bag in a plastic bag and dispose of it in an outside bin immediately.

Please don’t try to kill bed bugs by using agricultural or garden pesticides. Using outdoor pesticides can make you very sick and new CRRU guidelines are very strict about the pesticides which can and cannot be used for pest control.

Freeze them

If you don’t have access to a washing machine or tumble dryer, you can try freezing things like towels, bed sheets, toys and clothes. You will need to leave items in the freezer for at least four days at a temperate which is lower than 0˚F (-17˚C).

Remove them by hand

If you’re not squeamish, you can try to capture and kill bed bugs yourself. It’s unlikely you will get them all but it can at least help to reduce the numbers. Simply grab a torch, an old bank card (or something similar), clear tape, plastic bags and some hot, soapy water.

Use the light and card to search for any bugs by moving the card along any cracks and crevices to push them out. Use the sticky tape to trap them and then throw them in the plastic bag and seal it tightly. Finally, use the water to wipe away the bugs as well as any blood stains, droppings, eggs and shed skins.

Call a professional

If you’ve tried everything and you still have a bed bug infestation, please don’t hesitate to give Prokill a call. We will be able to eliminate the problem quickly and effectively as well as provide helpful advice for preventing future outbreaks.
