Nobody wants to be faced with a cockroach infestation. Aside from being extremely unpleasant, these insects breed very quickly and they can also be incredibly difficult to get rid of, so we have compiled our top tips on how to prevent cockroaches in the first place.

When it comes to these unpopular pests, prevention is your best defence. Even clean homes and businesses can become infested if the smallest sanitation steps are missed, therefore we recommend trying to ensure you follow the regime we’ve highlighted below.

Eliminate food sources

Eliminating any potential food sources inside and around your home is one of the most effective ways of preventing a cockroach infestation. You can do this by:

• Cleaning kitchen appliances on a regular basis. Cockroaches will happily live off grease and food spills which can accumulate very easily if you don’t deep clean behind and alongside your appliances on a regular basis. The biggest problem areas usually include the fridge, dishwasher, stove, toaster, microwave and underneath the sink
• Emptying out cabinets and giving them a thorough clean – crumbs are a great source of food for pests and most of us have plenty of them in cupboards where we store food items
• Vacuum regularly – when we’re preparing and eating food, it’s very easy to drop crumbs so make sure these areas are hoovered on a regular basis
• Wipe down kitchen countertops every night
• Don’t leave pet food exposed overnight
• Store any leftover food in a sealed container. Cockroaches can very easily get into cardboard packaging
• Make sure all rubbish is stored in a bin with a tight-fitting lid regardless of whether it’s inside or outside

Block off any entry points

Cockroaches can crawl through even the smallest of places so it’s important to seal off any potential entry points to your home or business. This can include cracks in walls, gaps in doors, between walls and countertops, underneath doors and in between floorboards.

This may be a time-consuming job but if it’s easy for cockroaches to get in, you’re far more likely to fall victim to a cockroach infestation. You may think you’re safe in a block of flats but it’s actually even more important to do this. Especially if you’re in an apartment – your neighbours might not maintain the same standards of cleanliness as you do.

Fix any leaks

Cockroaches are attracted to moisture and water so if you have any leaks coming from pipes, this could lure them in. Even if you have a small leak, try to fix this as soon as possible and don’t let water stand in your sink or over-water indoor plants. These pests can survive months without food providing they have a source of water which is why they’re often drawn to these areas.

Work with a local pest control company

A cockroach infestation isn’t just unnerving – if you run a business, it can destroy your reputation.

A local pest controller isn’t just handy to have around when you notice these undesirable creatures scurrying around, they can work with you throughout the year to prevent an infestation occurring in the first place.

An initial consultation can determine if you already have a problem or if you’re at risk of falling victim to one. From here, a bespoke plan can be tailored to your home or business to eliminate the infestation or prevent potential future outbreaks.
