While the unusually warm summer has been a much-welcomed surprise, it does, unfortunately, mean that the UK is experiencing higher than usual cases of bed bug infestations.

If you suspect that you have these pests in your home or at your business premises, it’s very important to have the problem dealt with as soon as possible because they can spread quickly and easily.

The first step is knowing the signs of bed bugs so that if you do have them, you can deal with it quickly to minimise any damage caused.

  • You’ve started to notice dark or black stains on your mattress and/or the surrounding area. This is usually either bed bug faeces or blood spots. The blood spots tend to occur as a result of blood-filled bugs being crushed when you roll over while they’re feeding. You will usually notice these on sheets, pillowcases or even your pyjamas. Naturally, the more of a restless sleeper you are, the more you’re likely to see blood stains.
  • There’s an unexplained unpleasant, sweet, sickly smell in your home
  • Even though they’re small, it is possible to see bed bugs with the naked eye. Be sure to thoroughly inspect the most common areas they’re found in including beds, clothing, suitcases, sofas and carpets
  • It can be hard to identify the signs of a bed bug infestation through bites alone because they’re usually painless. If you have been bitten, however, spots will usually appear in a linear, row-like arrangement. While bites are usually the first thing people notice, bed bug bites are similar to many other insect bites and allergic reactions. For this reason, bites alone aren’t enough to determine with certainty that you have an infestation.
  • Bed bugs tend to gather and hide in large groups so you may notice patches of faecal matter, egg shells or shed skins around the house. As baby bed bugs move toward adulthood, they shed their skin a total of five times. You’re more likely to find these around hiding places rather than out in the open like you would with blood stains.

Where To Find Bed Bugs

If you’re starting to notice the signs of bed bugs but haven’t physically seen any, there are a number of places they’re most likely to be found including:

  • Bed frames and headboards
  • Carpets
  • Drawers and cupboards
  • Wardrobes
  • Bedside cabinets
  • Mattress seams
  • Skirting boards
  • Floorboards
  • In cracked or broken plaster or behind peeling wallpaper
  • Inside electrical sockets and fittings

You will be able to identify bed bugs by their appearance. They are small and oval with brownish coloured, flat bodies and are about the size of an apple seed. After feeding, their bodies swell and they will become a reddish colour.
