These pesticides are used by many companies such as Prokill because they’re effective and fast-acting, making them the more humane method of dealing with rodent infestations.
Unfortunately, when dealing with outdoor areas, these products can easily poison other non-targeted wildlife species. Numerous studies have documented harm to many other animals including foxes, kestrels, owls, raccoons, squirrels, crows and more.
The exposure of rodenticides to non-target wildlife is a problem but new legislation introduced thanks to the Campaign for Responsible Rodenticide Use (CRRU) will help to put a stop to this. Here at Prokill, we’re delighted to announce that we are fully supporting CRRU and have already implemented the necessary steps to ensure we’re fully compliant with new regulations.
What has Prokill done to comply with CRRU?
We have reviewed our external baiting policy and have committed ourselves to following the best practice laid out in the guidelines.
As part of this, during every routine inspection we attend, we will comply with the 10 points we have highlighted below. Additionally, we will always complete an Environmental Risk Assessment before any work is carried out.
In order to ensure that all of our pest controllers are using rodenticides correctly and in ways which minimise exposure to wildlife and other non-target animals, Prokill will comply with the following code of practice:
- We will only use rodenticide baits for the minimum period that will achieve control
- We will always follow the guidelines which have been laid out on the product label
- Records of all treatments will be kept
- We will have a site plan or location list for your premises so that external bait station locations can be identified quickly and easily
- A record of the quantity of bait which has been used will always be kept
- We will check for and dispose of any dead rodents which have been found (other wildlife can receive a lethal dose when they feed on poisoned rats or mice)
- We will conduct a thorough inspection of your site to assess current activity
- We will highlight any areas of your site which are posing a risk of ingress by foraging rodents
- An Environmental Risk Assessment will be carried out before any job is completed
- We will make recommendations for any improvements which can be made externally to reduce the likelihood of rodent infestations occurring in the first place. If we can prevent rodent activity from occurring in the first place, it eliminates the need to use rodenticides at all
