It’s not just us who’s keen to get out of the cold! Unfortunately, rodent infestations are very common at this time of year because rats and mice dislike being out in the cold just as much as us.
The good news is that there’s plenty you can do to avoid these creatures coming into your home or premises.
Check For Existing Infestations
The first step is to have a thorough examination of your property to ensure that you don’t already have rodents lurking around. Aside from the obvious physical signs such as droppings, footprints, bite marks on the furniture, evidence of nesting or damage to packaged foods, there are other tell-tale signs you may be unaware of including:
- Greasy tracks along the floor
- Rodent activity increases after dark so if you suspect an infestation, it may be worth setting up a late-night mission to try and detect any squeaks, movements and unexplained sounds coming from behind walls
- There’s a stale smell in the building and you can’t identify the source
Block Any Potential Entry Points
If there are any holes in your property, this is a great time of year to seal them up. Feel around your house or premises for any areas where you can feel a cold breeze coming through.
Filling these gaps not only helps to keep the building much warmer, it can also prevent rats and mice making their way in. No matter how small the hole is, never underestimate the capability of a cold and hungry rodent.
Some common entry points include:
- Inside, underneath and behind kitchen cabinets, fridges & stoves
- Inside cupboards near floor corners
- Around windows and doors. Young rats and mice can even squeeze through small gaps under doorways so fit strips to the bottom of doors
- Pipes under sinks and washing machines
- Floor and dryer vents
- The attic and/or basement
- Electrical, plumbing, cable and gas lines
- Cat flaps. Try locking your cat flap at night or installing a microchip cat flap which will only let your pet inside
Remove Food Sources
Winter is a difficult time in the wild. With food sources becoming increasingly scarce, it’s natural that rodents are going to want to make their way inside. To prevent this from happening, ensure you:
- Keep any kitchen rubbish in containers with tight-fitting lids – both inside and outside
- Turn compost piles to cover newly added food scraps
- If you provide food for birds, only feed them huskless items which leave less residue
- Keep opened food items in thick plastic containers with tight lids
- Clean up spilled food immediately and wash any dishes soon after use
- Put pet food away after use and don’t leave food or water bowls outside overnight
