While any city is likely to deal with its fair share of pest infestations and our Manchester Pest Control team are facing an ongoing and growing rodent population.
It’s not just the city’s businesses, eateries and homes which are struggling either. Back in 2015, Trafford council inspectors criticised the football team, Manchester United for failing to keep their rodent infestation under control.
Away from the hustle and bustle of the busy city centre, Manchester’s surrounding towns including Stockport and Bolton are also dealing with rodent infestations.
A survey published earlier this year revealed the parts of Bolton suffering with the biggest pest control problems.
It was found that postcodes in Bolton town centre, Farnworth and Great Lever all featured in the top ten areas visited by pest control in 2019. While Crompton Way, Hall Lane and Alberta Street racked up more than 100 rat-related visits between them, Crescent Road was the most visited for mice.
Rats were by far the most common pest the local authority dealt with. With 8,948 visits last year, this was almost ten times more than mice which came in at second place.
Why does this north west city and its surrounding towns struggle so much with rodents?
Greater Manchester is always hit particularly hard. Being a busy and densely populated area with plenty of cafes, restaurants, pubs and bars, this is to be expected. The large student population does exacerbate the problem however with pest control call-outs often increasing around fresher’s week. With a sudden influx of students into the city, there’s more waste both inside and outside – something which always draws rodents in.
While the UK as a whole is hardly renowned for its great weather, the north is often hit the hardest. Whether it’s rain showers, flooding or bitterly cold temperatures, the residents of Manchester are often faced with adverse weather conditions. It’s not just humans who don’t like the bad weather either. When the weather turns sour, mice and rats will make their way indoors where there’s more likely to be food supplies and somewhere warm for them to settle.
Other contributing factors to Manchester’s growing rodent problem include its generous water sources, old and vacant buildings and frequent roadworks.
When faced with any kind of pest infestation, it’s important to deal with the situation quickly. Rodent populations in particular can grow out of control very fast. This is such a concern for local residents that many say they can’t wait for the council to visit their property and are willing to pay more for a private company who offers a same-day service.
