Bed bugs have been headline news for much of this week after experts have warned that a plague has hit British cities.

A number of factors have contributed to the epidemic but the unusually hot weather and an increase in travel have been cited as the biggest culprits for bed bug infestations.

As the UK has been told to brace itself for the outbreak, bed bugs are already a major problem in densely populated cities. If you’ve fallen victim to an infestation, below is everything you need to know about how bed bugs are treated.

Bed bugs solution

How to get rid of bed bugs, not only are bed bugs incredibly unpleasant, they are unfortunately also very difficult to get rid of. The best chance you have of successfully treating an infestation is to get professional help right from a bed bug control service company.

You can contact your local council or a pest control company that’s a member of the British Pest Control Association (BPCA). Please ensure that you always check for the BPCA accreditation because this provides you with assurance that the company you’re using is properly trained and insured and can be trusted.

While you may not think this matters, it’s unlikely that you want to throw money away paying someone to treat bed bugs, only for them to come back. Also remember that insecticides can be harmful when not used correctly so the safety of your family and pets should be top priority when choosing a company.

Once you’ve chosen who to use, your technician will start by carrying out an inspection to confirm the infestation. Even if you’re certain you do have bed bugs, it could actually be another biting insect such as mosquitos or fleas.

Pest control services and solutions vary depending on the species infesting your home so once your technician has confirmed what you’re dealing with, they can then use special treatments such as insecticide, a steamer or a rapid freeze system.

They may also advise you on other things you can do to help. This may include:

  • Washing clothes and any bedding on a hot wash or putting them in the tumble dryer on a hot setting
  • Vacuuming up any bed bugs you can see. Don’t forget to dispose of the contents of the bag securely so they don’t crawl out again
  • Throwing away any furniture that’s heavily infested
  • Putting a plastic cover over your mattress to stop bed bugs getting in or out

While bed bugs have typically been associated with dirty places, it’s important to remember that they can be found anywhere. Whether it’s a grubby hostel, a five-star hotel, an aeroplane or any other form of public transport – these pests don’t discriminate and they can very easily be transported from one place to another.
