Common sense does, of course, tell you to call a plumber or an electrician if you suffer from a flood or electrical fault. Your tradesman carries out the required repairs and everything returns to normal. So how come just a week later you\u2019re faced with the same issue? Did the person you hired do a shoddy job? Or perhaps you\u2019re just very unlucky?<\/p>\n

Chances are that neither of these statements is true and you actually have yourself a rodent infestation.<\/p>\n

Rodents love to chew and they will happily gnaw away on anything they can get hold of \u2013 even if it is your water pipes or electrical wiring. How do you know if you have a problem however and what can you do about it?<\/p>\n

The damage caused by rodents can be substantial and it may happen over time or as one big flood.<\/p>\n

When the damage is slow, you may notice a small amount of water continuously seeping into spaces within the walls. This may cause mould or wooden beams to start rotting.<\/p>\n

Alternatively, rats and mice may chew through pipes which are already weak and worn out. Because the pipe will have already been in a delicate state, even just a small amount of rodent damage can cause it to burst and large amounts of water loss will occur quickly.<\/p>\n

How To Stop Rodents Chewing Through Water Pipes<\/strong><\/p>\n

This may sound counter-intuitive but if you suspect that you might have a rodent problem, provide a source of water which is easy for them to get to. Of course you don\u2019t want to encourage the presence of these creatures but if they\u2019re already there, they\u2019re going to need water and if they have to resort to desperate measures to stay alive, they will.<\/p>\n

Don’t Resort To Poison<\/strong><\/p>\n

Again, this may sound like another crazy suggestion but rodent poison causes dehydration \u2013 hence why they will stop at nothing to try and get to a water source. The best way to eliminate a rodent infestation is to lay down traps or even better, call a professional. As well as being able to remove the source of the problem immediately, they will know how to do so in the most humane and environmentally-friendly way.<\/p>\n

It may not seem like the tastiest of choices but rodents love to chew on wiring. It sharpens their teeth and helps them get through holes which have been drilled to run cables and electrical wiring.<\/p>\n

Not only is this a complete nuisance, it can lead to short circuits, dead wires and even fires. So what can you do about it?<\/p>\n
