If you make yourself aware of the signs, you may be able to stop the problem before it gets too serious. <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the more obvious signs is rodent droppings around the building. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may notice unexplained nesting materials such as shredded paper, fabric or dried plant matter.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food packaging has been chewed. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Holes have been chewed through walls and floors \u2013 rodents will do this to create entry points into the property. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stale smells which are difficult to identify the source. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Block any potential entry points<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you don\u2019t want rats and mice to enter your property, don\u2019t make it easy for them. Seal any holes inside and outside the building, no matter how small they are &#8211; rodents can squeeze through much smaller holes than you might expect. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of the most common entry points for rodents include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inside, underneath and behind kitchen cabinets, fridges and stoves <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inside cupboards near the floor corners<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Around windows and doors. Young rats and mice can even squeeze through small gaps under doorways so fit strips to the bottom of doors as a deterrent<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fireplace <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pipes under sinks and washing machines<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Floor and dryer vents<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The attic<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The basement<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Around holes for electrical, plumbing, cable and gas lines<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cat flaps<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can prevent rodents entering your property through these entry points by filling them with stainless steel wire wool, caulking or concrete. Steel and aluminium plating can also be used and be aware that rats can jump so make sure you check up to a height of about four feet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Remove nesting sites from your property <\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At this time of year, it\u2019s particularly easy for rodents to gather nesting materials because the leaves start to fall off the trees.
