With spring finally upon us, we get to enjoy the warmer weather and lighter days. Unfortunately, this also appeals to insects which is why they start to re-emerge from their winter slumber throughout March.<\/p>\n

While these pests aren\u2019t as problematic at this time of year compared to summer, we do start to see more infestations from spring onwards. It\u2019s important to keep an eye on the signs of insects so that problems can be dealt with before they escalate.<\/p>\n

Signs of an insect infestation<\/strong><\/p>\n

From ants, bed bugs, flies, bees and wasps to beetles, cockroaches, fleas, hornets and moths, there are many different insects and the signs of an infestation<\/a> of each can vary. Generally however, look out for:<\/p>\n

\u2022\u00a0Insects. Sounds obvious but if you have an infestation, you\u2019re likely to spot them crawling or flying around. Also check hidden areas such as within cracks and crevices of shelves (especially if they\u2019re made from wood)
\n\u2022\u00a0Insect remains including whole carcasses, body parts and cast skins
\n\u2022\u00a0Droppings (many look like poppy seeds)
\n\u2022\u00a0Piles of fine dust or powder
\n\u2022\u00a0If you have larger insects, you may also hear noises such as scratching or scurrying. These will typically come from the insides of walls or the loft<\/p>\n

How do I stop insects from coming into my home?<\/strong><\/p>\n

As we\u2019re more likely to keep windows open and be out and about during the spring months, it\u2019s difficult to keep insects out of homes entirely.<\/p>\n

There are a number of ways you can prevent a full-blown insect infestation<\/a> however, such as:<\/p>\n

Clean often<\/strong><\/p>\n

Insects tend to gravitate towards mess because it can act as a food source and a good hiding place. One of the best ways to keep them at bay is to keep your home clean and tidy.<\/p>\n

Wipe down kitchen surfaces regularly so there are no crumbs, vacuum at least once a week, ensure that all bins (both inside and outside) and covered and sealed and declutter.<\/p>\n

Remove food sources<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is key with any pest. Remove easy food sources such as fruit and open cereal boxes on countertops. Also clean up pet food bowls and any debris they\u2019ve left as soon as they\u2019ve finished eating.<\/p>\n

Also think about if you\u2019re providing a source of water for insects. As well as providing a crucial way to stay hydrated, wet areas also serve as a breeding ground for insects. Don\u2019t leave water standing in the kitchen sink, use a dehumidifier if you have damp spots or condensation and check pipes for signs of leaks.<\/p>\n

Install window screens<\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s nice to let in some fresh air when it\u2019s warm outside but open windows make it very easy for insects to make their way inside. If insect infestations<\/a> are a problem, consider installing screens on your windows. This will allow you to keep them open without worrying about unwanted pests flying or crawling in.<\/p>\n
