This also looks very unsightly and presents a slip hazard
• They can dislodge roof tiles and leave debris in drains and gutters – causing blockages and floods
• Birds will happily use anything to build their nests and have even been known to collect burning cigarette butts – meaning they’re a potential fire hazard
• During breeding season, birds may attack people when protecting their young
• They carry a number of diseases which can be passed on to humans including E.coli and Salmonella
• An infestation can be very noisy
• They encourage other infestations because insects, beetles and fleas are attracted to nesting sites

How do I stop birds becoming a problem?

While it’s perfectly normal to spot the odd bird, there are a number of tactics you can employ to prevent them making your property a nesting site. If you can avoid this, you’re far less likely to suffer a problem with birds.

Remove food sources

Now the weather is getting warmer, there are more food supplies in the wild. An easy source will always encourage any pest however so it’s important to ensure you’re not providing an easy and constantly supply.

Remove any potential food sources including:

• Bird feeders
• Pet food
• Compost bins and rubbish bins – make sure all bins are completely secured and covered and that rubbish hasn’t been pulled out by other animals
• Food debris from outdoor eating areas
• Check your roof for potential food sources

Install a deterrent

Usually used for pigeons, spikes and barriers over window ledges are a great deterrent for any type of bird. Netting and sloped sheathing also work well because once they’re in place, birds physically won’t be able to settle around your property.

Scare-pigeons are lightweight kites and are typically sold in the form of hawk silhouettes. If you place them where you’ve noticed pigeons roosting, they will help to scare them away. Try to remember to move the decoy on a regular basis because pigeons get used to them and will stop being scared.

A very simple and cost-effective way to keep birds away is to use anything with a reflective surface. When the sun hits a reflective object, it creates a prism effect which interferes with pigeons’ eyesight. Stick reflective tape, foil balloons or old CDs to the roof or dangle them from trees or along awnings and this will stop birds from settling.

Make your property as uninviting as possible

If it’s easy for the likes of pigeons and seagulls to settle, they will. Check your property for bird-friendly places such as soffits, vents, chimneys, gutters and large gaps. If any of these areas look like a good nesting site, install the scare tactics mentioned above.

For more tips on preventing or removing a bird infestation get in touch with Prokill and our experts will be happy to help.
