In just 30 days, a female fly can lay up to 600 eggs so as you can imagine, an infestation can get out of control very quickly.

Whether you have an issue at home or at business premises, below we have listed some simple steps you can take to help get rid of flies.

Perform A Deep Clean

There are of course a number of traps and sprays you can use to kill flies but in order to get rid of them for good, it’s crucial to eliminate the source of the problem.

Sanitation is the first measure of defence when it comes to flies so carry out a thorough deep-clean. As well as disinfecting countertops, pull out furniture and clean and hoover behind it. This is especially important in areas where food is stored, prepared or eaten because it’s very easy for crumbs to drop and go unnoticed.

Eliminate Any Food Sources

As with any pest, the reason they’re most likely to hang around is that there’s an easy food source. Taking this into consideration, one of the most effective ways of preventing and eliminating an infestation is to take away any potential food supplies. There are a number of ways you can do this including:

• Keep any rubbish (both inside and outside) in a bin with a tight-fitting lid
• Clean rubbish bins on a regular basis so there’s no food debris on them
• Clean your drains on a regular basis
• Store fruit and vegetables in the fridge
• Clean up any food spillages immediately
• Don’t leave pet food out

Buy  Fly Spray

Most supermarkets, hardware stores, and DIY shops will have insect spray which you can use to kill flies. While this is a great solution if you’ve only noticed the odd fly here or there if you think you may have a bigger infestation, unfortunately, a can of bug spray is unlikely to be much help.

Natural Remedies

Although it might seem as though flies are anything but fussy, they are actually quite averse to certain smells and flavours. What’s more, because they taste through the hairs on their legs, they’re actually very sensitive to landing on things they don’t take a fancy to.

If you’re trying to get rid of flies and you would prefer to do so in a natural way, below are some great home remedies you can try:

• There are a number of strong-smelling plants that flies don’t like including basil, lavender, mint, bay leaf, tansy, and wormwood. Simply place them anywhere in the house or near an open window to deter these unwanted pests from coming into your house
• Flies really don’t like the smell of essential oils – particularly eucalyptus and lavender
• Hang a bag full of water outside windows and doors. This may not look particularly pretty but it’s great to stop flies entering your home. A bag full of water will reflect lights everywhere and it’s therefore very confusing to flies as they have a remarkable amount of lenses in each eye
• Citrus peel (particularly orange) is a very cheap, easy and effective way to get flies to move on quickly

Call a pest control company

If you have a problem with flies, the best thing you can do is call a local pest controller. They will be able to effectively assess the situation, tell you if any damage has been caused to your property and they will, of course, be able to fully eliminate the problem rather than simply contain it for a short period.
