With so many untargeted creatures being accidentally poisoned, Think Wildlife has called for stricter measures to be introduced in a bid to protect them.

When looking for a pest control provider, it’s very important to ensure they’re adhering to the CRRU code. Not only will this help to ensure that innocent animals are being protected, also because if rodenticides aren’t used properly, we risk losing them completely.

What to look out for in a pest controller

A company which is complying with new regulations should adhere to the following 10 points as highlighted in the CRRU code of practice:

• Only using rodenticide baits for the minimum period that will achieve control. Most infestations can be completely controlled within 35 days
• Always follow the guidelines as laid out on the product label
• Records of all treatments should be kept
• A site plan or location list for your premises which identifies all external bait station locations should be made available
• A record of the quantity of bait which has been used should always be kept
• Dead rodents should be checked for and disposed of by your pest controller
• A thorough inspection of your site to assess current activity should be completed
• Any areas of your site which are posing a risk of ingress by foraging rodents should be highlighted
• An Environmental Risk Assessment should be carried out before any job is completed
• Recommendations for any improvements which can be made externally to reduce the likelihood of rodent infestations occurring in the first place should be offered

If you’re unsure about any of the points mentioned above, please discuss this with your pest control provider. They should be more than happy to take the time to discuss the CRRU code with you and explain what it means and how you might be affected.

What happens if an infestation can’t be contained within 35 days?

If your premises is deemed high risk or if rodenticides will need to remain on your site for a prolonged period of time, Prokill may undertake a long-term baiting strategy. If this is the case, we will fully comply with CRRU guidelines and the statutory elements of the product label.
