What is the best environmentally friendly pest control?

With employees and consumers demanding sustainability, businesses are being forced to show their commitment to environmentally friendly practices.

An independent study commissioned by SmartestEnergy has in fact revealed that 81% of people prefer to buy from sustainable sellers. There are many ways companies can help to do their bit for the environment, with their pest control methods being just one.

Speaking about this issue, the British Pest Control Association commented:

“Fundamentally for any site, sustainable pest control has to be assigned a much higher level of importance. It should be included in the specification in order to prevent infestation while delivering cost-effective integrated pest management, to the benefit of both the planet and the bottom line.”

Whether you’re looking for pest control for a commercial or private premises, below we share some of the best environmentally friendly options.

Environmentally friendly pest control for birds

Birds can be a big problem for both commercial and residential properties. As well as damaging buildings and solar panels, droppings can present slip hazards, they can be noisy, aggressive when protecting their young and they can even be a fire risk if they pick up lit cigarettes.

Some of our top environmentally friendly pest control for birds includes:

Decoys

Decoys such as kite-shaped hawks, wooden owls and owl faces on masks are great ways to keep birds away from your premises. Wood is much more environmentally friendly than balloons and will last much longer too.

Natural bird repellents

There are a number of organic, homemade remedies which can be very effective when it comes to repelling birds.

You can try placing balls or containers of strong spices around your patio, exterior windowsills or wherever birds tend to gather around your property. The best spices to use are chili powder, cayenne pepper, black pepper or cinnamon.

Hawking

If you’re looking for a natural and humane way to remove birds, hawking is a great solution.

It involves using specially trained birds of prey, such as hawks, to deter gulls, pigeons and other pest birds. This is done in a way which will not cause any harm to the birds or the environment.

Please note that all wild bird species are protected by law in the UK. This means that you shouldn’t try to kill or remove nuisance birds yourself. Always call a professional pest control company such as Prokill, who will be able to deal with the issue safely, effectively and importantly, legally.

Environmentally friendly pest control for rodents

Rodents are one of the most feared pests. It’s very unsettling knowing they’re scurrying around and they can also cause significant damage, spread disease and get businesses shut down, sometimes permanently.

For the ultimate environmentally friendly pest control for rodents, there are a number of natural scents which can help to deter them including:

• Peppermint. Put some peppermint oil on cotton wool balls and place them in corners of your home. Replace every few days to keep rats away
• Castor oil. You can soak cotton balls in the oil or just spread some where you suspect they’re hiding
• Citronella oil. Use the same method you would for peppermint and castor oil
• Rats don’t like strong odours such as crushed pepper and onions. Be careful leaving these items around the house if you have children and pets. Onions are toxic to dogs and can cause anaemia in cats so it’s safer to stick to the oils if you have pets around the home
• If you want to stop rats entering your garden, there are a number of plants known to repel them because of their smell. These include marigolds, rosemary, peppermint, lavender, onions, grape hyacinth, garlic, daffodils, oregano, sage, cayenne, black pepper and tomatoes

Environmentally friendly pest control for wildlife

The Campaign for Responsible Rodenticide Use (CRRU) means that there are strict rules when it comes to applying rodenticides outside. This is because they can be highly toxic and need to be used correctly to ensure that wildlife and other non-target animals like pets are kept safe.

Please don’t try to use rodenticides outside yourself. If you have a problem with wildlife in a domestic or business premises, please contact a professional pest controller.

At Prokill, we carry out all our services in accordance to the Campaign for Responsible Rodenticide Use (CRRU). The products and techniques we use don’t cause harm to wildlife and unintended targets such as pets.
