The UK hasn’t quite been enjoying they typically warm summer we’ve been used to of late however that doesn’t stop the pests coming out in full force.
One in particular you’re likely to have encountered in recent weeks is flies. While they’re always active at this time of year, you’ve probably noticed them around your bins more than usual and when the weather is warmer, food decomposes much faster, making our bins the ideal spot for flies.
How to stop flies swarming rubbish bins
Inside bins
Try to remember to keep the lid of your bin closed at all times. This means that even if flies do manage to make their way into your home, they won’t be able to access the contents of your bin.
Clean and disinfect both the inside and outside of your bin on a regular basis. This will help to remove old food scraps and liquid which has leaked out.
It’s easy to drop scraps of food near the bin so make sure that any spillages are cleaned up immediately.
There are a number of herbs flies don’t like the smell of so hanging them up near your bin can help to keep these insects away. A couple examples include lavender, mint and elder. You can also smear tea tree oil or citronella on the lid of your bin to help keep flies away.
Fly killer units are a great way to get rid of these unwanted pests. You can get sprays, plastic traps and electric fly killer units from any good hardware store. When using anything like this, please be careful and make sure you read the instructions properly if you have children or pets around the home.
Outside bins
It’s a good idea to double bag all food waste and make sure you’ve securely tied the bags before putting them in your outside bin. The extra layer will make it harder for flies to detect and access decomposing food which is going to smell more than usual in the heat.
Before you tie your rubbish bags up, try to squeeze as much air out of them as you can. A lack of air will help to slow down decomposition as well as reduce smells, meaning you’re less likely to attract flies.
Ensure the lid of your bin is securely closed. This will help to prevent other pests such as rats from gaining access as well.
Regularly clean and disinfect your bins. This will help to prevent a build-up of food scraps, grime and smells.
If you can, store your bin in the shade, out of direct sunlight. This will also help to slow down decomposition and any smells from forming.
