Do ultrasonic pest repellers work on mice?

A quick Google search for how to get rid of mice returns millions of results, so it’s no surprise that knowing where to start can feel like a bit of a minefield.

One solution that regularly crops up is the use of high-frequency sound, often sold as ultrasonic pest repellers. These devices emit sound waves at a frequency humans can’t hear but rodents supposedly can. The theory is that the noise is uncomfortable enough to drive mice away from your home or business.

So, do ultrasonic pest repellers actually work on mice?

Research suggests that rodent behaviour can be influenced by certain ultrasonic frequencies, but only when they are delivered in very controlled, specialist conditions. This type of technology isn’t available in off-the-shelf products, meaning the devices you can buy online or in shops don’t operate in the same way.

Some commercially available ultrasonic repellers may have a short-term effect, particularly on mice that haven’t yet settled or established a nest. However, once rodents have a reliable food source, warmth and shelter, it’s highly unlikely that sound alone will persuade them to leave.

There are also practical limitations. Ultrasonic sound doesn’t travel well through solid objects and is easily absorbed by furniture, walls and soft furnishings. This creates “dead zones” where mice can simply avoid the noise altogether.

If you’re dealing with a mouse infestation, the most effective solution is to contact a local pest control professional. A trained technician can identify entry points, address the root cause of the problem and resolve it quickly and safely, rather than relying on gadgets that may offer little more than false reassurance. Contact our pest controllers who will be able to eradicate the problem quickly and effectively.
