How to get rid of ants
One of the most common mistakes people make when trying to get rid of ants is killing any that come into sight. While this does, of course, eliminate some of the problems, the ants you’re seeing are workers and foragers. They’re responsible for finding food and taking it back to the nest for their queen. In order to completely eliminate an ant infestation, you need to kill the queen.
Doing this is going to require a bit of prep work. When you spot an ant inside your home, watch it to see if you can identify where it takes the food. Once you’ve found the nest you will be able to treat the whole area which is much more effective than simply killing ants as and when you see them.

Most supermarkets and DIY stores such as Homebase and B&Q will sell commercial insecticides. While sprays are great at killing worker ants, they won’t affect the queen who will be hiding away in the nest.
More effective methods include ant gel or powdered poison. Both have a sweet scent and taste which attracts the ants who will then take it back to the nest. This ensures that even those hiding away in the nest will be exposed to the poison and you’re therefore more likely to kill off the entire colony.
When using any poison in your home, please do so very carefully – especially if you have young children or pets who may be able to get hold of it.
Natural homemade solutions
If you don’t like the thought of spraying chemicals in your home, there are a number of natural remedies which can be used to help eradicate ants.
One of the most effective methods is to mix boric acid with sugar or syrup. Because ants live anything sweet, they will be drawn to the mixture and take it back to the nest for the queen to eat. The mixture should be a ratio of 1:3 – for every 1 tablespoon of boric acid, add three tablespoons of the sugar. Stir in water until the mixture turns into a syrup consistency and then place it around the entrances to the nest.
While this is a more natural method of killing ants, boric acid is still highly toxic so it might not be the right solution if you have children or pets in the house.
For an incredibly humane way of eliminating an ant infestation, try squeezing lemon juice into every nest entrance you can find. While this doesn’t kill the insects, it’s a powerful deterrent and can force them to relocate.
