From burning them down and hitting them with a baseball bat to throwing water on them, there are plenty of ways to destroy a wasp nest according to Google.
Please take it from the experts, these are all terrible ideas. Not only is setting fire to anything incredibly dangerous, wasps are naturally aggressive creatures and it doesn’t take much to provoke them to attack. If you decide to take on an entire swarm, they will sting you continuously until they feel safe again and we can guarantee this is a battle you will not win.
If you have a wasp nest that needs to be removed, below we have listed the safest and most effective ways to do this.
Call A Professional
The best thing to do if you need to remove a wasp nest is to call a professional. Not only do they know what they’re doing, they have all the protective gear necessary to avoid getting stung.
They will also be able to dispose of the nest properly so that it doesn’t become a hazard to someone else. What’s more, professional pest controllers are trained and have access to products which aren’t available to the public. These are more powerful than what you can pick up off a supermarket shelf and will therefore ensure the successful removal of any wasps.
Use A Bin Bag
We do not recommend that you try to remove a wasp nest yourself but if you have to, one of the easiest ways is with a bin bag.
Aim to do this at night and approach the nest quietly so you don’t alert the wasps to your presence. Take a bin liner and cover the nest. Detach the nest from the tree or wall it’s attached to and seal the bag very securely so no wasps can escape. Dispose of the bag in an outside bin which has a tightly fitted lid, preferably away from your home.
Use A Wasp Removal Product
You don’t necessarily have to remove the entire nest, just the wasps that are living inside it. You can do this by using a product you can buy from supermarkets or hardware stores. Simply keep applying the product until the wasps have died or moved on.
When using DIY products, there are a number of important factors to consider:
• Only use approved products from a reputable shop. Anything else could contain ingredients which are harmful to other wildlife.
• Only go down this route if the nest is small, on your property and it’s easy to access.
• Do not under any circumstance attempt to remove a wasp nest if you or anyone else in the property is allergic to wasp stings.
Safety Tips
If you do decide to tackle a wasp nest yourself, please at least consider the following safety tips:
• Ensure you can make a swift exit in case they decide to attack. If you’re in an enclosed space such as a loft, try to remember to close the door or hatch when you leave to prevent the wasps from entering your home.
• Carry out the removal at night. Wasps are more docile at this time and are therefore less likely to attack.
• Make sure your arms, legs, hands, feet and face are covered to protect against stings.
• Avoid using a light source such as a torch because this will alert the wasps to what you’re doing.
• Keep children and pets well away because they’re more vulnerable to stings.
