- A dad collapsed during a shopping trip after being bitten repeatedly on the back and neck by the UK’s most venomous spider. The false widow – closely related to the black widow – sank its fangs into Chris Galton 10 times. Paramedics had to treat stricken Chris with oxygen while rushing him to hospital where his brown, five pence-sized attacker was identified.

- Six months ago, the council stepped up its war on the pests by bringing in birds of prey. The rising number of pigeons nesting in the courtyard had forced staff to close it to the public, who used it as a picnic area, because of the potentially harmful droppings. Two Harris hawks, Nessa and Duke, from Prokill Pest Prevention, descended in the summer as part of a four-month bid to rid the area of vermin.
